Point Cloud Asset Interrogation
Point cloud surveying is rapidly becoming the standard method for digitising the railway corridor. While many engineers are familiar with POD files, few have fully leveraged the potential of these datasets. With the evolution of 3D data interrogation techniques, new opportunities are emerging to extract greater value from point cloud data.
From raw point data, we can analyse structural inclination, geometry, and perform point classification to identify asset types. These insights enable better-informed decisions, reduce the need for on-site inspections, and open the door to advanced comparative analyses. Such capabilities can provide early warnings of structural or embankment movement, supporting proactive maintenance and safety strategies.
Point Cloud Cropping
Point cloud files are often extremely large, which is a key factor slowing their adoption in engineering projects. Much of the data captured during surveys is not relevant to most engineering tasks. By merging and cropping point clouds to retain only the assets of interest, file sizes can be significantly reduced—making the data more manageable and increasing its practical use.
